Julia's words can be seen accompanying works by visual artists. Her last project is on this page, and we have a link to an earlier set of collaborations with glass designer Cate Watkinson, which are still very much on view. She wrote words and poems to accompany an exhibition of new paintings by Emma Holliday (who did the covers for the last three of Julia's books). Emma's vibrant, expressive and lively paintings were seen in the stylish surroundings of Apartment in the autumn of 2004.
The artist Roxy Walsh, who works at the University of Newcastle, asked Julia to take part in a visual exhibition called INFALLIBLE: In search of the real George Eliot. She went to Deptford to look at the work that's already part of the exhibition, and reported: "There is a fantastic film of a talking shoe by the artist Jaoao Penalva. There is also lots of other interesting work, that broadly deals with themes of narrative, unreliable narrators, and transformations. In the exhibition we see things made into other things; moths wings made into a molecular pattern, a film of a young white girl being interviewed as Michael Jackson. It's all very interesting stuff. I have written the first draft of a story called May Queen. I will be developing the story, and I am also inviting others to write in the voices of other characters from this early draft. The website is www.Infallible.org.uk so I hope you can visit it and contribute, if you have time."
