won the 2003 Raymond Williams Community Publishing Prize, awarded "to commend a community-based publication that reflects the life of a particular community both creatively and imaginately." This is an annual award open to non-profit-making publishers. Julia and photographer Sharon Bailey were employed by the Alzheimer's Society North Tyneside Branch to take photographs, run workshops and do individual interviews with carers and people with Alzheimer's. They also met with scientists from the Institute for Ageing and Health at the Newcastle General Hospital.
Julia says: "It was a complete surprise to win this national prize, and we're delighted that the Alzheimer's Society has won enough money to set up another arts project."
Here's a brief extract:
She still eats rhubarb with her ham but it's because she likes it now, not because she thinks it's potato. She's always been odd - long before she was ill. I'll not change that, wouldn't want to.
She has queer things. She puts a garlic bulb in with lettuce and boils it up. She has jam with her lettuce! She says 'Mind your own business! You don't have to have it, but I like it like this.'
The book costs £5 + £1 postage and packing.
