I don't know how I have the nerve to write to you as I read you are still fighting cancer.

I heard you speaking on a Radio 4 poetry programme some months ago. As I was recovering from a mastectomy I listened carefully.

I then went out and bought Sudden Collapses in Public Places. WOW! WOW! WOW! It really has helped me. I bought a copy of the book for a fellow patient who also found it helpful. I have been "given" a Breast Care nurse who is a great support, and I am thinking of suggesting that the unit at St. Lukes hospital [Bradford] have a copy in their very special ward.

I think I am now very close to returning to land I was in this time last year having been in the Land of cancer.
I truly hope your treatment is successful.

Merle

Hi there
I just read your save our short story story and thought I'd mail to say how ace I think it is. It's so moving and I love the way you detailed the little things that are important to women, especially when they are feeling low.

I know you probably teach thousands of people a year but I thought I'd also tell you that your workshops gave me a lot of encouragemnet when I was younger.

I was taught by you at a writer's workshop back when I was still at 6th form (I'd won the Teesside young writer prize, so got to go along on a course at Teesside Airport with the kids from the private schools in the area.)

You opened my eyes to new ways of thinking about things and new ways of writing and really made me want to take writing seriously.

That was 7 years ago now and I'm still writing now and am currently on with my first novel, so thanks for making me take an interest back then.

That's about it really.

Natalie

On 30 April, at the Gulbenkian Studio, Julia presented her Manifesto For Tyneside Upon England. Writing in her weblog, Julia said: "Last Friday we had the Flying Homages night at the Playhouse here in Newcastle. ... I recommend writing ones own manifesto. Like new blood, it quite fires one up, and makes you feel like charging into the streets. ... and would like to know what readers of this log would put in their own manifesto."

Readers have already started to take Julia up on her challenge and you can read the initial items here.
